“You’d even do the laundry?” he gaped, eyes about as wide as saucers. I couldn’t help but laugh. I was talking to a new acquaintance about some of the work I have done as a personal assistant, and he was quite surprised to discover that I would do something as mundane and undesirable as the dreaded laundry for this client of mine.
My answer was yes, we’d even do your laundry. The entire goal of a personal assistant is to take care of all of those little, mundane things that you hate doing. Love to travel but hate making an itinerary and scheduling flights? Personal assistant! Want new home decor but hate the thought of one more decision? Personal assistant! Want healthy groceries and easy meal preps but don’t feel like planning and shopping? Personal assistant! Running all the errands you hate to do? Organizing that dreaded closet? I think you get the point.
It may be easy to think of a personal assistant as a more sleek, structured job than it actually is. It’s not all business-casual pencil skirts and phone calls. A good personal assistant is going to get into the weeds of your life and help you clear out all those things getting in your way—no matter how silly or small they might feel to you. The reason is that they’re not silly: the little things pile up, and when you’re a busy professional with a hectic life, the mental load can feel like a pile of rocks.
If you’re working with a personal assistant, you should feel that load lifting. The wild juggling act of your personal and professional life should subside. You’re still likely the type of person who likes to keep busy—but that busyness should be aimed towards the things you really care about, not bogged down by the details you could care less about.
The reason you feel like no one wants to do these things is because you don’t want to: they’re not your main focus. And rightfully so! But as personal assistants, our goal is to free you to focus on the things they care about, meaning those little mundanities are actually our focus. As someone who cares about the little details, making someone’s life better in those little ways brings me a lot of joy. So yes, we’ll do your laundry. And hopefully, we’ll do so much more!
